Destination Thailand Visa (“DTV”) is a new visa program by the Thai government aimed at attracting foreigners who want to work remotely while staying in Thailand for an extended period. It allows for longer stays, which helps boost the local economy by supporting various businesses like restaurants, hotels, and tourist attractions.
The visa is designed for “Digital Nomads”, freelancers, and those involved in “Thai Soft Power” activities such as Muay Thai, Thai cooking, sports training, medical treatment, seminars, and festivals. DTV holders can stay for up to 180 days, with the option to extend for another 180 days, totaling up to one year. They can also bring their spouse or children under 20 years old into Thailand.
The Thai government is also working on the “Six Countries, One Destination” initiative with Myanmar, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam to position Thailand as a regional tourism hub. To prevent abuse of the visa exemption system, an Electronic Travel Authorization (“ETA”) system is being developed to improve security and streamline visitor entry.
Both the DTV and ETA systems are expected to launch by the end of 2024.
