GPSC Expands into Data Centre Energy Market in Thailand and India

Global Power Synergy Plc (“GPSC”), the power generation subsidiary of PTT Plc, is expanding its business strategy to capture the growing demand for electricity and steam from data centre operators in Thailand and India.

In India, GPSC operates the Bikaner solar farm through its subsidiary, Avaada Energy Private Limited. India has been identified as a target jurisdiction for energy sales to data centre businesses, reflecting the increasing regional and global demand for energy supply to support cloud and digital infrastructure.

According to GPSC, global power demand from data centres is rising at an annual rate of 12–14%, with Southeast Asia recording the highest growth at 20% per year. Data centres require significant electricity and steam, the latter being used to mitigate heat generated from intensive computer networks.

Thailand has positioned itself as a hub for digital infrastructure through the Board of Investment (“BOI”), which has approved more than 28 projects, including foreign investors with capital investments exceeding THB 500 billion. These projects are estimated to require approximately 800–1,000 megawatts of power supply. The BOI has also granted tax incentives to encourage further investment in this sector, aligning with national digital economy policies.

In response, GPSC is undertaking a feasibility study, expected to conclude by year-end, to evaluate the commercial and regulatory framework for supplying energy to the data centre industry. Concurrently, the company is in discussions with strategic partners regarding business cooperation in both Thailand and India.

From a financial perspective, GPSC has adopted an efficiency programme aimed at reducing operating costs and increasing earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (“EBITDA”). The company has already achieved cost savings of THB 214 million during the first half of this year, with a target of reducing expenses by THB 500 million by year-end. Projections indicate further reductions of THB 700 million in 2026 and THB 900 million in 2027.

This strategic shift into the data centre energy market represents a material development in GPSC’s corporate strategy, combining renewable energy production with opportunities arising from digital infrastructure expansion in Thailand and India.
